Born in Calgary, Alberta, and raised primarily on the Manitoban prairies, Kathy Kennedy has been a professional vocalist for over 2 decades. Her soulful powerhouse vocals and strong stage presence confidently display her experience. Kathy has sung the blues for the past 15 years and developed her love for the genre at the King Eddie Hotel in Calgary, upon listening to an unnamed American blues artist. She is not only a singer/songwriter, she is the creator, founder and promoter of “Women in Blues Manitoba”, and the manger and booking agent for her own band. Kathy is also a contributor to the “Save the Windsor” campaign, which was founded upon the rumour of the demolition of WInnipeg’s Home of the Blues.

Flower bulb planting is a perfect job for a crisp, sunny fall day. You’ll want to plant now to achieve that amazing first splash of color in the springtime. Typically, September till the 3rd week of October is ideal. This timing allows for the root development of your spring-flowering bulbs that need a period of cold in order to flower well. If you can still dig into the ground, plant away! For the best results, choose large bulbs – the more mature the bulb, the larger the flowers, and plant the bulbs as soon as possible. Spring flowering bulbs thrive in full or part-sun areas with good drainage. As a rule of thumb, plant large bulbs 8-12″ deep and 3-6″ apart. Smaller bulbs can be planted 4-6″ deep and closer together. Water generously and forget about them until you see firsthand your stunning results in the springtime! Not everything about fall gardening is cleanup…happy planting!

Garden mums provide unparalleled color throughout the fall months and bloom in almost every color imaginable. There are many different forms of the beautiful flower, from daisy-like, to pompon, spoon-petal, and decorative, which is the most common form with long, tightly overlapping petals. These blooms can last for weeks, not days and the sheer volume of the blooms will convince you that this plant loves to show off. Add the longevity of its life-cycle to its impressionistic abilities, and you have an incredibly well-rounded plant. Mums are a great plant for decorating in fall. Choose golden yellow, orange, bronze or white to arrange with your pumpkins, gourds and straw bales. Most garden mums can tolerate a light frost – making it perfect to last right through to Halloween. Or simply pop them into a clay pot, or line them up in a window box.
If you want to plant your mums, here are some tips to get them through our harsh winter. Plant them in full sun – some varieties can get away with half a day of direct sunshine, but more is better. Really good drainage and fertile soil is also really important. Your garden mum should never be allowed to wilt. Consistent watering is essential, right up until hard frosts keeping the soil moist as winter approaches. If you want to keep your garden clean looking, cut back the plant after several hard frosts and the mums have blackened. Otherwise you can cut them back in the springtime. Mulching over your fall mums to a depth of 3-4″ after the soil has frozen will help ensure their return next spring.
